Writer Profile: Paula Boer

Paula Boer was born in England and moved to Australia at the age of 28. She lives on 500 acres in the Snowy Mountain region with her husband, five horses and an old dog.

Paula loves the natural world and has traveled in sixty countries across six continents. She particularly enjoys wilderness and wildlife. Some of her adventures are reflected in The Okapi Promise.

When Paula isn't writing, she spends hours on horseback exploring the countryside and is learning to play the piano. Her favorite author at the moment is Barbara Kingsolver, but she has been a fan for many years of Wilbur Smith and James A. Michener.

We had the pleasure of developing a professional relationship with Paula early in IFWG Publishing's formation and worked closely with her to get The Okapi Promise right. What added to our interest in this novel was the opportunity to include photographs of various scenes and landscapes that are described in her title, which added an extra dimension for the reader.

This is the cover of Paula's first novel, and the following is its blurb:

A cure for rabies is discovered in the heart of Africa. Two unknown adversaries join a small tour group to gain the serum. One wants to use the cure for the good of all mankind; the other for personal glory and profit.

The travelers are threatened by wild animals, tribal unrest, personal hardship and vehicle breakdowns. Set at the start of the Rwandan Civil War, the race to patent the new drug is against more than time. The physical and emotional challenges of the journey across the whole continent leaves no-one unchanged—and one of them won't come out alive.

  1. I'm sorry to say my old dog died yesterday, at 17 years of age. Doc, a kelpie x German Shepherd, will be remembered by many with fondness - he had a huge fan club. We will be celebrating his life with a spit-roast party. Maybe one day, when I can cope better, I'll write his biography. He had as many stories to tell as me!

  2. Sorry to hear about your kelpie, Paula. However, 17 years is a good innings.
